Before the housing bubble, the homeowners of this Coral Gables Street attracted tempting offers from one of South Florida real-estate developer. After a few months, many of the homes got sold and later demolished. Little by little the strategy worked; the street got empty out.
Most of the neighbors moved away. Except for the Capote family.
Lucia and Orlando Capote refused to sell their home.
The memories contained inside their house were impossible to replace. No money and no house could provide what they wanted to keep.
Throughout the years, their story attracted much of the local and international media outlets. It did not help them stop the
adjacent construction any further.
People wrote them letters, asking them to move. Many asked them to step away in the name of progress.
After years of negotiation, temptation, and pure pressure towards the family, the developers decided to construct their project without the Capote’s family parcel.
